2008 Value Oregon Pinot noir
Latest Wine Spectator Ratings
Cardwell Hill - Spindrift Cellars-Patton Valley
Also, Archery Summit Style - Forefront Pinot noir 08
Solid scores keep rolling in for Oregon's 2008 Pinot noirs. This week's Wine Spectator Insider features a handful of value Pinots with nice reviews. Cardwell Hill, whose 2006 Estate Pinot (91) was on Wine Spectator's Top 100, racked up another 91 pointer. You can expect to see the 2008 in the buyer's guide, likely featured in the "Smart Buy" section. Could be another Top 100...
Another neighbor of Avalon is Spindrift Cellars. Their 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a great value - Wine Spectator's 90-point rating makes it even more appealing. Finally, a regular Wine Spec favorite, Patton Valley, notches another 92.

Wine Spectator: "Silky and refined, this plays out its flavors of red cherry, wild berry
and guava on a graceful frame, with a hint of caramel, remaining
soft and elegant through the finish. Drink now through 2014." - H.S.
This is a softer, smoother 2008 Pinot noir filled with charming scents and flavors of dark cherries, blueberries, clove and cardamom. The winery and estate vineyard is located in the foothills of Oregon's Coast Range, and the coolness of the site makes for well-balanced Pinots.
Cardwell Hill Cellars reached international fame when their 2006 Estate Pinot was selected for Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2008. They are located a stone's throw from Avalon, just outside of Corvallis, Oregon.

Wine Spectator: "Dark and spicy, this is silky in texture and fragrant with smoke,
toast and mineral overtones as the cherry fruit character rolls
nicely through the long finish. Drink now through 2016." - H.S.
A local find, Spindrift nailed it in 2008. Easy-going black cherry and subtle oak add a round feel. This is good juice.
Forefront Wines
Pinot Ridge/Archery Summit $19.94
$17.95 any 12 bottles
Forefront Pinot noir 08, for under $20, was made in tribute to Archery Summit's founder, Gary Andrus. Archery Summit (owned by Pine Ridge) is located in Oregon's Dundee Hills. Forefront Pinot noir 08 contains a big chunk of Dundee Hills fruit.
The best value "bigger-style" Oregon 2008 Pinot I've tasted, with all of the exquisite balance of 2008. This stuff rocks for its explosive aromas and lush palate of Marionberries and black cherries, wrapped up with a bow of licorice and complementary oak. Put more plainly, this drinks like a $40+ Pinot. Forefront makes a huge inpression on you, much like Gary Andrus did with his wines. - Marcus
