Springhill
|
The vineyards and winery look west to the McDonald Forest, the beginnings of the Coast Range, north of Corvallis, Oregon. A silhouette of the hills is shown in the gold foil on their label. Both vineyard and winery are located on the west slope of Springhill, a small hill on the banks of the Willamette River west of Albany in Benton County about six miles north of Corvallis. The guiding winemaking philosophy is that great wines are grown, not made. Therefore, Mike's greatest efforts go into producing fruit of the highest quality and concentration and then interfering as little as possible in the process of coaxing it into the bottle. Grape yields are kept low with the Pinot usually below 2 tons per acre and the Gris and Riesling at 3 tons per acre. The Pinot is neither fined nor filtered. Racking and pumping is kept to a minimum. The Gris is made in a rich fruity style with some oak contact. The Pinot is aged a year in a variety of oak barrels with a goal of concentrating fruit balanced with rich oak tannins. The Riesling fermentation is very cool and long, routinely finishing in late February, which we feel produces intense varietal aromas and flavors of apricot, honey and peach. Springhill produces 1,000-2,000 cases of wine each year, weather permitting. |
