These five Washington wineries might not seem like peers at first glance. But consider the vineyards that provide their coveted wines: Champoux and Ciel du Cheval. While the first four are synonymous with Washington wine, Soos Creek flies under the radar, turning grapes into purple gold.

From the same vineyard that makes Quilceda Creek Cab and Andrew Will Sorella comes this indie-sensational Champoux Cab. Delivering lipsmacking, balanced, age-worthy Cab for $36 isn't easy, but Soos Creek nails it. The 2006 Soos Creek Champoux Cabernet rocks. To me, the hallmark of Champoux Cabernet is the big, beautiful black cherry core. Soos Creek's Cab adds sweet blueberry and blackberry with vanilla mocha and dried herbs. Supple and totally delicious.

The blend this year is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cab Franc, both from Champoux Vineyard.

Soos Creek Ciel du Cheval 06

Explosively aromatic, with flavors to match. Huge cassis, blackberry and red cherry are backed up by classic Ciel du Cheval structure. Still, the wine is rich and rounded, with graphite nuances accenting the pure, long finish.

The blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc and 16% Merlot.

Drink me, drink me! That's the Artist Series #6 calling, with it's flashy, sweet cherry and berry megaphone of flavors. Creamy red fruit keeps on talking, with whispers of sage, spicy cedar, and white pepper.

Made from 34% Champoux, 32% Weinbau, 28% Dineen, 6% Ciel du Cheval vineyards. This year's blend is 48% Cabernet Franc and 52% Cabernet Sauvignon.
