Woodward Canyon's new
releases for spring are some of the first, and best, of the new Walla
Walla wines scheduled for Spring release. We'll be sending out a
number of emails over the next two months, letting you know about
the best of the Walla Walla region's wines, as information is available.
In this email, we also recommend Walla
Walla Vintners' newly released Sagemoor Cuvee 03. Lastly,
we offer a "Covet Case" of six
bottles of Sineann Block One Cabernet 04 and six bottles
of Andrew Will Sorella 03, both
made from the Old Block Cabernet of Champoux Vineyards.

Woodward Canyon Artist Series
Cabernet Sauvignon 03 is now avaialble in 750 ml and Magnum
sizes |
Woodward
Canyon Winery was established by Lowden native Rick Small
in 1981. One of the first Walla Walla wineries, it quickly rose to
fame with a series of intense, complex, long aging red wines. The
winery has consistently produced premium, award-winning Cabernet
Sauvignons and Merlots as well as barrel-fermented Chardonnays. His "Old
Vine" Dedication Series Cabernet Sauvignon is considered some
of the best American Cab made today. His "Artist Series" Cab
celebrates regional artists with a wine blended from a number of
Walla Walla's best vineyard sources.
Woodward
Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon
Artist Series 2003 $35.99/$39.50
Tastings, March 2006: 93 points -- "Brilliant
ruby red hue. Black cherry, black currant, tar, clove and menthol aromas.
Medium-full to full-bodied with excellent concentration, this is a deeply
concentrated wine that has a bright future ahead of it. The youthful
tannins and oak are nicely integrated and there is very good persistence
of fruit."
Varietal Comp: 89% Cab, 6% Franc, 5% Merlot. Aged
20 months in oak.
Produced from grapes grown at Champoux, WWC Estate, Canoe Ridge, Klipsun,
Sagemoor, Tapteil and Pepper Bridge Vineyards.
The 2003 Artist Series was produced from grapes grown
primarily at Champoux, Woodward Canyon Estate, Canoe
Ridge, Klipsun, Sagemoor, Tapteil and Pepper Bridge vineyards. These
seven vineyards are some of the most highly regarded properties in Washington
and produce fantastic wines in their own right. In a blend, they can
produce extraordinary wine.
2003 was a very ripe vintage and this Artist Series
Cab is unusually forward, rich and ready to drink while young. Rick says
the Artist Series 03 "has a beautiful nose of spicy oak and cedar
integrated with ripe black fruits and cherry. A firm rich mouth feel
begins with cassis and black berry leading towards chocolate and mocha.
The finish is generous and long".
Woodward
Canyon Chardonnay 04 $28.80/$32.00
New release April, 2006. Known as a supple, elegant, refined Chardonnays,
this wine is made in very small amounts and has a loyal following.
Woodward
Canyon Merlot 03 $31.95/$34.95
New release April, 2006. Blended from several vineyard sources, a Merlot
for aging. More of a food wine, a companion to fine foods. Usually ages
well for 8-10 years.
About Rick Small - Walla Walla Wine Pioneer
Woodward Canyon owner Rick Small grew up in Lowden,
just down the road from Walla Walla. He attended the school now occupied
by L'Ecole #41 Winery, next door to Woodward Canyon's facilities.
Rick attended school at No. 41 from 1953 to 1960.
Baseball was on the mind of the youngster from a Walla Walla family raising
wheat and cattle. One of four boys, Small had ranch chores, but was provided
time for extra school activities such as sports. At left, Rick at ten,
from a photo of the school team in 1959.
Rick's family owned the property behind the old teacher’s
quarters, next door to the schoolhouse, for many years. It is where Rick
made Woodward Canyon wine. About eight years ago, he purchased the old
1870 farmhouse at the front of the land and turned it into the winery’s
tasting room
Interestingly, the sandlot field where Rick played
baseball as a boy was a vacant lot between L'Ecole and Woodward for many
years, and has now been planted as a vineyard.

1959 team.

Walla Walla Vintners owners
Myles Anderson and Gordon Venneri |
Walla
Walla Vintners is another of the pioneer wineries of Walla Walla,
founded by Myles Anderson and Gordon Venneri in 1995, after more than
ten years of homecrafted winemaking. They started in the early 1980's
with oak chips, plastic buckets, Coca Cola syrup stainless steel containers,
and yeast from a local source selling supplies for beer brewing.
From such humble beginnings, Walla Walla Vintners
has become a local favorite, and Walla Walla residents grab the reasonably
priced, very high quality wine for themselves. Now Myles and Gordon make
enough wine to sell out of the area. Their wines are some of the best
values from the Walla Walla appellation, and are recognized nationally
as outstanding in quality and affordability.
Walla
Walla Vintners Sagemoor Cuvee 03 $37.76/$41.95
Varietal
and Vineyard composition:
60% Bacchus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon,
30% Dionysus Vineyard Merlot
and 10% Bacchus Vineyard Cabernet Franc
Marcus (Avalon) says: "A very inviting
red wine from the start: dark plum, coffee and tobacco leaf aromas
that carry through to the palate. Layered fruit--plum, cassis,
and hints of dark dried cherries. A touch of sweet and spicy
cedar complements the dark cocoa on the penetrating finish. The
Sagemoor has a wonderful balance of acidity and tannins to reward
cellaring over the next 4-6 years. Or, grab a prime steak and
fire up the grill--it's spring, after all!"
