Wine Spectator's Latest Reviews
Highly Rated "BIG RED" Washington Wines
Last call for Sineann Old Vine Zinfandel
September 20, 2005

While the Washington State issue of Wine Spectator seems to be coming out much later than usual this year, (maybe because Harvey was busy with the huge Australian issue that's just out) there are three newly reviewed Washington reds in the current issue worth your consideration:

Five Star Merlot 03 $28.30/$31.45
http://www.northwest-wine.com/Five-Star-Cellars.html
Wine Spectator 92 points:
"Deep, dark, gorgeous stuff, a generous mouthful of sweet, oak-accented black cherry, blackberry and currant flavors that mingle seductively on the long, beautifully focused finish. Sylish stuff, wants cellaring." H.S. An Avalon "NW Big Reds Club" October 2005 selection. This young guy has a real knack for making big, rich wines.

Woodward Canyon Estate Red Walla Walla 02

Wine Spectator rating 90 points: "Firm in texture, with a distinct minty note running through the rich berry and currant fruit flavors, hinting at sage as it persists nicely on the chewy finish. Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2007 through 2012. 628 cases made." (HS)

Owen Roe Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla 03 $36/$40
http://www.northwest-wine.com/Owen-Roe-Walla-Walla-Cabernet-Sauvignon.html

Wine Spectator rating 90 points: "Firm, a harmonious Cabernet with spicy, coffee-tinged curant, blackberry, and herb flavors, finishing with a wisp of leather." H.S. New from Owen Roe, David O'Reilly is very excited about this blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 9% Cab Franc sourced from Walla Walla's Seven Hills Vineyard Block 17. Block 17 fruit is also purchased by Quilceda Creek, Pepper Bridge Winery, and Leonetti, and is considered one of the best sources of fruit in Walla Walla. It's the first new vineyard source that David O'Reilly has worked with in awhile.

It's a saturated, opaque wine with sweet cherry, candied blackberries, and herbal notes in the nose, and flavors of blueberry, black cherry, cassis, spice, and toast with hints of cocoa and toasted coffee bean in the long finish. The finish is long and harmonious, beautifully balanced and concentrated. The package, as is usual with Owen Roe, is gorgeous.

Owen Roe Dubrul Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 03 $54.00/$60.00

Speaking of Owen Roe, we stocked up on the Dubrul Cab before the wine sold out, have have a nice supply tucked away. The previous vintage received 91 points from Wine Spectator. From the beautiful, hand pulled engraving on the label to the polished, intricate layers of flavor and scent, the wine is a world class cellar selection. It's a wine to lay down for 6-10 years, enjoying an occasional bottle along the way. Drinking well now, patient cellaring will greatly reward the patient.

It's last call for
Sineann Old Vine Zinfandel 04 $35.95
http://www.northwest-wine.com/sineann.html

Peter Rosback's flagship wine, made from 100 year old vines that produce tiny amounts of grapes per vine, harvested in 2004 at 26 brix (that's really really good). The wine is dark, liquid pyrotechnics with an immense nose, a goliath of a wine, densely concentrated and deeply pleasing. Also very limited.

The Guyot guide says: " Who would have thought that one of America's finest Zins would come from predominately cold-climate Oregon? Blended from Columbia Valley fruit, this wine offers an endless medley of red berries, dusty earth, white pepper and caramel oak to draw out the finish."

Less than 400 cases of Sineann Old Vine Zinfandel were made, and they're almost gone. If you want some, this is the week to order.
