Viento Syrah Cuvee "R" 2003Viento Syrah Cuvee "R" 03 $17.77/$19.75
Wine Spectator 90 points "Rich and generous, with a lively balance of just enough acidity to keep the smoky plum and cherry flavors rolling through the long, peppery finish. Drink now through 2010. 150 cases made." (HS)

The Cuvee R is a juicy, toasty Syrah with delighful but subtle hints of floral Viognier in the scent. Earthy, exotic spices, smoke, and nice toasty, sweet oak add complexity to the dominant lush, black cherry and berry fruit in the nose and the mouth. It's a blend of five Columbia Valley vineyards' fruit. The vintage was very good, Rich knows how to work with Syrah fruit, and the result is another year of great value Syrah. . -jy

With so many Washington Syrahs selling for $30 and up, this wine is such a deal! The 2002 vintage received the rare "three clusters" rating from Northwest Palate. Less than 100 cases left, we have good supply of this instant sell-out.

O-S Wine Red 2004Owen & Sullivan's O-S Wine "Red Wine" 04 $18.86/$20.95
Wine Press NW "Outstanding" Summer 06 --
Made with fruit from Champoux, Sheridan, Meek & Ciel du Cheval Vineyards, this is the "press" wine left after his highend monster reds are made. An exceptional value, Bill says "it's his best ever".

Flavors are of black cherry and dusty dried red cherry, with hints of spice. While tannins are soft and approachable, they are there in proper balance, as is a racy acidity that makes this richly slurpable wine good with food. Bill's love of the rich aromatics of Cab Franc show in the meaty, smoky oak notes that peek out from the big cherry fruit in the scent and flavor. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with maybe a bit of Syrah in there as well.

Andrew Rich Cabernet Franc 04 $17.75/$19.95
One of the best under $20 Cab Francs we've ever had. From a very warm summer, super ripe fruit and good winemaking resulted in a really lush Cab Franc that shows off how much fun this grape's wine can be.

Pleasing when first released, this Cab Franc has taken on weight and richness with time in the bottle. An intense nose of floral, black fruit, and meaty/smoky notes is followed by concentrated flavors . Black cherry, black raspberry, and blueberry intermingle with sweet clove and cinnamon spice, white pepper, and meaty, chewy rich bass notes in the mid-palate and finish. A real crowdpleaser, with enough structure to face up to a T-bone or NY Strip steak.

Andrew says: " On the nose at least you could mistake this for a very ripe Chinon: it's got that spicy-wild-berry-hint-of-tobacco-thang goin' on. Having spent 10 months in old oak and over a year now in bottle, the wine has become quite supple and round, and like the best Loire Valley Francs, just plain delicious."

Hyperion Syrah 04Harmonia Hyperion Syrah 2004 $18.86/$20.95
When a new winemaker comes over to the store to visit, we're always interested - and when the wines are as good as Michael Beckley's, we jump up and down with happiness (after he leaves, and only in the back of the store where no one else can see us). It's so pleasant to find a new up-and-comer, a winemaker who's producing lovely wines at reasonable prices and making winemaking his life. Michael has three tiny production wines, a Pinot noir that we think enough of to send to our Reserve Pinot noir Club, a lovely rich Chardonnay called Theia, and a big, concentrated, Syrah, called Hyperion.

Hyperion is another winner from garagiste Michael - there are juicy, lush flavors of classic black cherry, roasted meat, toasted coffee bean, and black currant, with a nice streak of acidity to keep the wine fresh tasting, anda pleasant finish. It's a Syrah comparable to many higher profile Syrahs at almost twice the price.
