2004 was kind to St. Innocent
Winery. First
it was the 2004 Willamette Valley, where we
thought “dang, that’s good” (and
it was less than $20). Then Temperance
Hill, Shea, and White Rose Pinot noirs followed
and we said “OK, OK, these are awesome.” Just
when you think you’ve seen it all…the
2004 St. Innocent Seven Springs and Anden Vineyard
Pinot noirs come along.

on the 2003 Seven Springs Pinot noir:

adored the complex violet,
red cherry, blackberry,
bilberry, spice, and rose-laced aromatics of the 2003
Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard. This structured,
medium-bodied wine demands cellaring. Noticeably concentrated
and deep, its red and black cherry-dominated personality
is ensconced in ripe tannin and will require patience
before it fully blossoms.

from the glass with mouth-watering aromas
of bilberries, black cherries, soy sauce,
and flowers. Hugely concentrated, this big, muscular
wine coats the taster’s palate with dark cherries
as well as hints of licorice.

Tasting notes from
Marcus:
I’m
not ashamed to say it—I
kind of flipped out when my nose met the aromas
coming from the ’04 Seven Springs. Loads
of darker red fruit, with a hint of creamy
wild strawberry, violets, and toasty oak. Wines
from Seven Springs often show an incredible
depth of fruit and in the ‘04 St. Innocent,
it’s layer upon layer of juicy red fruit. Superb
weight, body, and ultrafine tannins add to
the silkiness while faint white pepper notes
accent the “wait, it’s been two
minutes” finish. Just
delicious.
According to winemaker Mark
Vlossak, the 2004 Seven Springs was fermented
in a French oak, Burgundy-style Vicard fermenter.
Fermenting in oak, a lot harder to do than
in the usual stainless steel, adds depth and
texture to Pinot noir (when it is done right).
This Seven Springs Vineyard Pinot is made from
a special selection of only the three best
barrels (60 some cases total).

Although Seven Springs and Anden Vineyards
are contiguous, the wines produced from them
can be quite different. The older-vined ’04
Anden is a more youthful wine and is built
for the long haul. Scents of raspberries
and fresh blackberries are wrapped with spicy
dried thyme, sweet incense, and toasty vanilla
bean. The fruit becomes sweeter and
juicer in your mouth, while the hallmark
vibrant acidity of the 2004 vintage sings.

of St. Innocent impresses us and we keep saying “OK,
this time the prices will go up”. But
if they do, it’s a few cents! Mark
Vlossak is guilty of making some
of Oregon’s great wines at
incredibly fair values - and that makes him
