Parker's New Oregon Ratings:
What's Hot
"What's Hot"? Well it's 90+ degrees here
in my office
on a Sunday afternoon of the holiday weekend.
Besides that,
Parker's hot annual Wine Advocate Oregon issue is out,
with the commentary and reviews written, as usual, by Pierre
Rovani.
There are three 94 points wines this time, more than ever before, and
lots of 90-93 pointers. All in all, Rovani's assessment of Oregon is: "progress
is steady".
The three 94
point wines were:
Hamacher
Pinot noir 03 (will not be released for a year),
Bryce
Vineyard Pinot noir 03 ( sold out), and
St Innocent Pinot
noir White Rose 03
(sold out,
Avalon's
Reserve Pinot noir Wine Club members
received it in their June
2005 shipment).
We have a supply of the St Innocent White Rose
04, (featured in our last email)
which we think is better than the 2003. The time to order is now, if
you wait until it is reviewed next year, it will be long gone.
The six 93
point wines were:
Bethel Heights
Pinot noir Casteel 03 (featured in our last email),
Francis
Tannahill Syrah 02 (sold out),
St Innocent Pinot noir
Anden 03 (sold out),
St Innocent
Pinot noir Shea 03 (sold out, we have the St
Innocent Shea 04 available),
Soter
Pinot noir Beacon Hill 03 (sold out, sent to the Avalon
RPN Club in September 2005), Ken Wright Nysa 04 (sold
out).
Of the 90-92 point wines, we recommend the
following that are still available:

Wine Advocate 90 points.

$16.88/$18.75

Wine Advocate 89 points.

We recommend these newer vintages
of top
rated wines in the Oregon Issue of Wine Advocate:
HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED BY AVALON
St Innocent Pinot noir White Rose 04 $35.96/$39.95
The 2003 St Innocent White Rose received 94
points from Wine Advocate.
From the winery: "St Innocent's most hedonistic wine. It is the
only wine that I do not focus on the details of aroma or flavor. Instead,
I enjoy the pleasure, it is drop dead gorgeous. Aromas of perfectly ripe
fruit and hints of sweet smoky oak, it fills your mouth with dark fruits
and red flowers. Lush with ripe tannin, it is still quite young and should
fill out even more through the end of 2006."
Brick House Les Dijonnais 04 $41.36/$45.95
The 2003 vintage received 91 points from
Wine Advocate.
The 2004 Les Dijonnais, in nose and mouth, shows
floral, mineral, fruit, and smoke elements. Sweet red cherry and dried
roses intermingle with deep cherry, berry, and plum flavors, and there's
a hint of fresh turned earth after a spring rain. Elegant rather than
blockbuster, this is typically sophisticated and complex Brick House
-- classically Burgundian, with an Oregon twist.
Francis
Tannahill "The Hermit" 04 $40.46/$44.95
The
2003 Francis Tannahill Hermit received 90+
points from Wine Advocate.
Tasting Notes from the winery – The wine possesses a beautiful
dark garnet burgundy color from the almost opaque center to the rim.
Excellently focused aromas of violets and smoke immediately emerge from
the glass. Complex spice, sweet raspberries, bing cherries, blackberries,
game, minerals (wet stones) and earth notes come out with aeration. Very
ripe and perfumed, the aromatics lead to a rich and succulent palate.
Bethel
Heights Pinot noir Southeast Block 04 $32.40/$36.00
2003 Bethel Heights Southeast Block received 91
points from Wine Advocate.
2004 is a new release, June, 2006. From the winery: "Lush, layered
and finely textured, the 2004 Southeast Block greets you with a feast
of ripe raspberry, Bing cherry, plum and oak spice. The palate is
full and rich, balanced with ample acidity and tannin to provide
outstanding length and breadth."
J Daan Wine Cellars Pinot noir 04 $17.95/$19.95
2003 J Daan Pinot noir received 90 points from Wine Advocate!
J Daan is the winery of Justin Van Zanten, assistant winemaker to Andrew Rich
since 2001. With a sweet and appealing nose of perfumed raspberry and violets,
entwined with sweet toasty vanilla oak, this is a really nice everyday wine.
Flavors of black raspberry, red raspberry, red cherry, and a hint of nutmeg make
for a juicy, yummy, easy drinking Pinot. The finish is simple but well made,
and it's so easy to drink and enjoy.
Stevenson Barrie Pinot noir Shea Vineyard
03 $24.98/$27.75
The 2002 received 90 points from Wine Advocate.
Last week, we sent out
an email about the 2002, and you ordered quite a bit. Now the winery
is on to the 2003, which we think is as good or better.
