Et
Fille Elton & Maresh PN 2005
the Tomato/Tomahto Kids
from Avalon Wine
She compares wine
to movie stars. He's more of a data person.
That's the tomato/tomahto thing. Who they
are is the father daughter team of Et Fille,
Howard (tomato) and Jessica (tomahto) Mozeico. We
love their Pinots.
They have
a knack for selecting great vineyards and fruit,
and the ability to allow the vineyard's product
to show at its best. We're down to their last
two Pinots from the 2005 vintage, and they
are beauties.

Et
Fille Elton Vineyard Pinot noir 05
$32.95/$35.95
Avalon
says: The nose is wonderfully perfumed, with
scents of cherry candy and mixed berry, cola
spice, cinnamon, graham, creamy milk chocolate,
and bits of dried herbs and roses.
The focused flavors of wild
raspberry are framed with cherry, black berry,
and currant. There’s an initial silky burst
of fruit, which transitions to spicy tannins
and white pepper accents on the finish.
Drink now or cellar through
2010.
Howard says: " Pretty
and big nose. Marionberry and huckleberry tastes
with a pepper
overtone. Long, complex finish."
Jessica says: " Our 2005 Elton
reminds one of Natalie Portman- a delicate beauty that
will mature with time into complexity. The nose is
dominated by roses with jam overtones. The balanced
palate begins with blackberries but, with time, is
highlighted by cola and rich tannins. The velvety mouth
feel would best be enjoyed when you have the opportunity
to appreciate it over a dinner of game or fish with
a hearty sauce in the years to come."
Food pairing: The
Elton Pinot is VERY pretty when you give it
a little time decanted for the tannins to soften
or pair it with rack of lamb with pinenut and
pomegranate couscous.

Et
Fille Maresh Vineyard Pinot noir 05
$38.66/$42.95
Supple,
complex, inviting. Very few Oregon
vintners get enough Maresh fruit to make a
vineyard designate, and Howard’s one
of the lucky ones! Maresh is the highly regarded
vineyard from which Rex Hill made their highest
rated Pinots, and the site has a long history
of producing prizewinning wines.
Avalon says: Deliciously
inviting aromas of incense and vanilla spice,
with wide open red and black fruit. The Maresh
is beautifully supple with sweet pie cherry
and marionberry flavors against a backdrop
of complex mineral notes and bright acidity.
You’re going
to have a tough time keeping your hands off
of the bottles in the next year, but patience
will be rewarded. Drink now if you must, or
cellar through 2014.
Howard says: "Heady,
intoxicating nose with floral and red berries.
Cherries and minerals on the palate. Lingering
finish."
Jessica says: "Wow-
this wine will display true elegance with time.
The complex nose is followed by a bright fruit
palate and balanced by minerals, pepper, and
sage. The long finish is accented by oak. This
would best be held for a special dinner of
beef or veal in the years to come."
