Owen Roe 2005 Yakima Red & Dubrul Merlot

Friday night, 8PM, Marcus calls, going nuts.

What is this, I say?
He says: "Yakima Red."

Wine as he knows it is forever altered.

Owen Roe Yakima Red 05
$37.80/$42.00
Owen Roe Yakima Red 05Unforgettable. One of the most intoxicating noses of any red wine I've tried.

Heady and luscious black cherry gushes into your senses, complemented by streaks of red berries and cherries, perfectly integrated toast and Yakima earth, smoke, nutmeg, distant roasted coffee, and it still keeps unraveling.

After airing, absolutely velvety flavors of black cherries are layered with dark raspberries and sweet cherries.  Sure, the tannins are there but they’re woven perfectly into the mouth-coating texture of the wine.  The finish reiterates all the wonderful fruit you can’t wait ‘til the next glass to get more of, mingling with pink peppercorns, tiny hints of dried herbs, cloves, cream and cocoa shavings.

It will be a sad day when this wine is sold out.  Wait—it’s just released?!  The 2005 Owen Roe Yakima Red catches David O’Reilly at the very top of his craft.  - Marcus

Amy's notes & food pairings for the Yakima Red 05:
Balanced fruit, acidity, and complexity. Finesse. The smoky note on the nose and finish (as well as a dusky note mixed with pink peppercorn on the second day) would lend itself well to pancetta wrapped squab served with cranberry studded rice or pink peppercorn crusted and seared ahi tuna with grilled fingerling potatoes

Owen Roe Dubrul Merlot 05
$40.50/$45

Owen Roe Dubrul MerlotWashington State's Yakima Valley based Dubrul VIneyard, rehabilitated and made famous by David O'Reilly of Owen Roe, is the source for the grapes of this distinguished wine. Showing what makes Washington State Merlot unique, the wine presents a clean, intense streak of fresh tobacco leaf in the scent and finish that adds complexity and dimension to what is already an unusually intricate Merlot.

Initially, aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, sweet bing cherry, black plum, smoke, barrel toast, and that famous fresh tobacco leaf scent intermingle in the nose.

Flavors reiterate the nose, starting with an initial intense sense of sweet black cherry, black raspberry, plum, and black currant. Additionally, notes of bittersweet chocolate, barrel toast, bright bing cherry, and pie spices like cardamon, clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon show intermittently. That classic fresh tobaco leaf scent manifests as a subtle flavor note, and is joined by a distinct hint of cigar smoke.

The finish leaves you with a mouthful of everything.
Pure focused fruit, exotic spices, and bittersweet chocolate last and last
.- Jean

Amy's tasting & wine pairing notes:
I wish I could get all of my friends that snub Merlot to drink this wine. It would sweep them up and make them realize the error of their ways. Deep and rich in ripe cherry and red currant on the nose and palette with a beautiful finish of sweet tobacco leaf that continues to linger. A finesse that is lovely now and will only get better in years to come (though I don't think I'd be patient enough to let this age.)Perfectly in tune with the early bounty of spring, this merlot would be a lovely match with spring lamb chops grilled or roasted with sauteed morels, ramps, and spring pea shoots.
