Oregon Pinot noir Trivia Question:
Wine Advocate's highest rating ever for an Oregon Pinot noir (96 points)
went to wine made from what vineyard and block?

Answer:
Shea Wine Cellars’ blocks 25 and 28, for the 2002 Sine Qua Non Pinot noir.
Those grapes now go into Shea's Wadenswil Pinot noir.

Shea Wine Cellars Wadenswil Pinot noir 05

Shea Wine Cellars
Pinot noir Wadenswil 05
$46.76/$51.95

Tasting notes:

The exceptional Shea Wadenswil returns!

Deep, brooding aromas of violets, rose petals, and spice-shaded dark fruit, with hints of white pepper and blackberry flowers that echo in the finish.

Blueberry, currant, plum and cherry liqueur accents are supported by exotic barrel spice and hints of blueberry and plum jams, all of which linger on the powerful finish. The 2005 Wadenswil has a long life ahead, with acidity and fine tannins to suport cellaring or to pair well with grilled lamb or dry-aged beef.

The finish of the Shea Wadenwil 05 is silky, and although dense and deeply flavored, its superfine tannins are so well integrated in this big wine that "balance" is the word that comes to mind. Hints of milk chocolate and toasted coffee bean add complexity.

Shea's Wadenswil shows the characteristics of the Wadenswil clone - a big, dark, dense character with a blue fruit core. Shea's Wadenswil is usually best when cellared for a few years, and the 2005 is no exception.

Black Cap Pinot noir 05
$37.76/$41.95

Jason Lett's Black Cap Winery is a tiny production, "Indie" winery now affiliated with his family's Eyrie Vineyards.

The 2005 Black Cap is heavenly. Beguiling, complex aromas of floral perfume, sweet cherries, and dusky earth notes fill the glass. You can almost sense the mouthwatering juiciness.

Marionberry, sweet and tart cherry, fresh cream, and hints of culinary herbs are framed by the absolutely silky body. The tannins are seamlessly integrated, the wine so vibrant and juicy. The bright acidity lifts the pure, concentrated fruit through the long finish. Gorgeous now, the 2005 Black Cap Pinot noir will age beautifully. A mind-blowing follow up to the 2004.
