Last
call on 2004 Bethel Heights Estate, 2005 Eola-Amity
Hills
from Avalon Wine
No doubt about it: Bethel
Heights is sitting on some of our favorite—and
some of the finest—Oregon Pinots
from the 2005 vintage. We got a glimpse
of the 2005 vintage potential at a tasting
many months ago where the ’05 Eola-Amity
Hills Cuvee was first shown. The wine
was accessible yet complex, soft yet balanced
and concensus was “Wow! We can’t
wait for the rest of the ‘05s.”
Each time we taste a Bethel
Heights wine, from Pinot Noir to Pinot Gris
and Chardonnay, we're
reminded of Marcus's visit to the winery. Bethel
Heights became an instant favorite of his,
and when you taste the 2005 Pinots you’ll
see why.
The 2005 Vineyard and
Block designate Pinots were made in tiny
quantities, so they are only available in
the packs described
below. Order
as much as you like of the 2005 Estate
Grown—for
$30, it is the shining star of the vintage.
We're also offering a last chance to buy
the 2004 Estate Pinot noir,
and the 2005
Eola-Amity Hill 2005, excellent
wines from both price and quality standpoints.
The Wines
2005 Estate $29.75/$26.77
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This
is the steal of the 2005 Bethel Heights Pinots. Luscious
and supple for a younger wine, a nice dollop
of sweet raspberry, black cherry and blueberry
is complemented by earth, nutmeg and cinnamon
on the finish. Beautifully focused
and balanced, the 2005 Estate Grown Pinot
is an outstanding value in Oregon wine. When
I tasted it at the winery, I HAD to have
a bottle with dinner that night! -Marcus
2005 Flat Block $39.85/$35.87
I wrote two words at the end of my notes on
this wine: “purity” and “finish.” The
Flat Block, which is 100% Pommard clone Pinot,
features a lovely core of cherry and raspberry,
with strawberry and dark cherry accents The
finish just sails. -Marcus
2005 Southeast Block $39.85/$35.87
A bigger, darker Pinot with hints of pepper
spice that carry through from aroma to finish. Lots
of fresh blueberry and notes of blueberry
syrup mix with dark berry to provide a superb
base note.
Bethel Heights’ Southeast Block is 29
years old—some of the oldest Pinot vines
in Oregon. -Marcus
2005 Casteel Reserve
$49.75/$44.77
2004 vintage received 93 points from Wine
Spectator.
The blockbuster Bethel Heights wine. Raspberry,
black cherry, currant and pie spice waft from
the glass. This is a wine of great depth,
with a silky mouthfeel and an expansive finish. It’s
hard to believe there’s 50% new oak—it’s
so well integrated. -Marcus
2005 Seven Springs
Vineyard $49.75/$44.77
Loads of creamy red and black fruit—mostly
black cherry, darker raspberry, with whispers
of blue and black berry. At first the
wine is focused on the front of your palate
but then the flavors and finish begin to evolve. The
Seven Springs needs a little more time, but
it’s delicious. -Marcus
2005 Justice Vineyard
$39.85/$35.87
Lush aromas of raspberry, pomegranate, dusty
red cherry. Round and supple with cherry-
raspberry flavors and a hint of mocha. Firm
mid palate acidity provides balance and length.
Ripe fine-grained tannins round out the wine. -

LAST CALL FOR
TWO GREAT VALUE BETHEL PINOTS
Bethel Heights Pinot noir 05
Eola-Amity Hills $24.95/22.45
HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED BY AVALON
Bethel Heights' most youthfully
attractive Bethel Heights Pinot yet! Beautiful
aromas of red fruit and warm cinnamon - almost
like cutting into a fresh-out-of-the-oven cherry/raspberry
pie. Dont get the wrong ideaits
not just about yummy fruit. The elegant texture
dances the Pinot noir waltz. A serious crowd-pleaser
from an Oregon wine institution.
Bethel
Heights Pinot Noir 04
Estate $29.75/$26.77
This is a rich, powerful wine
with a nose of black fruits and earth, with
black currant, blackberry and black cherry
dominating. There is a hint of mint and oak
spice in the
background. Entry is sweet and round, fine
tannins broaden the wine on the palate, and
good acid balance carries the wine to a long
finish. Ageworthy. - the winery
