The annual Oregon
wine feature is in this week's Wine Spectator
(the one with the "Top 100" on the cover).
In it, the overall 2004 vintage received a
95 point rating, with the comment "Clear,
pure flavors and excellent balance - Drink
or hold".

Many of the 2004
Pinots are gone, but a few real standouts remain.
Here are four of the best we know of, from
wineries you may not have heard of, but be
happy you discovered them before everybody
else. This case contains three bottles of four
different 2004 Oregon Pinot noirs we highly recommend.
Winters
Hill Reserve Pinot noir 04 $50.00
LITTLE KNOWN GEM -
OUTSTANDING
I cannot emphasize enough what a big, well made
Pinot this is. New winemaker Delphine Gladhart has projected
Winters Hill's wines into the ranks of Oregon's best.
Sweet, rich cherry & raspberry
fruit with hints of vanilla and toast in nose and flavors.
The scent is just remarkable- about as luscious as
a nose gets.
Flavors
are noticable for their perfect balance- juicy
black cherry, red cherry, bing cherry, Rainier
cherry, pie cherry - every kind of cherry -
combines with lots of complementary vanilla
notes and hints of violet and rose petal in
the flavors and finish.

Patton Valley
Pinot noir 04 $29.85
Wine Spectator 90 points: "...offers crisp
texture and a beautful bead of currant, blueberry,
and meaty, spicy flavors."
We say -
A most beautiful Pinot noir with a great deal
of interesting and pleasing complexity. Scents
are of easily acessible red cherry and raspberry
fruit, with soft pie spice notes. Flavores
are of sweet blackberry and raspberry, big
sweet pie spices including cinnamon, cardamon,
clove, and allspice. The finish adds hints
of green and white peppercorns along with big
red fruit, lots of barrel spice, and vanilla.
Thanks to the winery for keeping the price
so reasonable.
Belle Pente Murto
Vineyard Pinot noir 04 $34.95

91 points: " Lovely, delicate stuff, with pretty
strawberry and spice and a hint of passion
fruit as the flavors linger against refined
tannins on the lithe frame. The finish lingers
beautifully. Drink now through 2012. 525 cases
made". –HS
The winery says:
"High-toned spicy, earthy, red fruit
aromas explode from the glass and
expand into round, sweet fruit on
the palate. Elegant and focused, this
wine promises even more depth and
richness with a few years in the cellar."

Pente Belle Pente Vineyard Pinot noir 04

Wine Spectator 89 points: "Light and fragrant,
appealing for its delicate cherry and strawberry
fruit, lingering softly on the deft finish.
Drink now through 2011. 426 cases made." –HS
The winery says:
"The wines from this section of
the vineyard tend to show flavors and aromas
on the "red side" of the black fruit
spectrum: cranberry, black raspberry, and plum.
This 2004 is quite forward and coats the palate
with sweet, silky, sappy fruit. It is absolutely
delicious now, but also has sufficient balance
for ageing 4-6 years. Although this wine began
life as the "little brother" of our
Estate Reserve, it has begun to take on an
identity of it's own. "
