Mountain Dome:
"extraordinary winemaking talent"
Jon Bonné, Wine Editor, SF Chronicle
"You taste an early vintage (of Mountain Dome) like 1990, and realize that it's still improving after 17 years, and you realize you're witness to some extraordinary winemaking talent." - Jon Bonné, Wine Editor, SF Chronicle
Mountain Dome has a cult following among
wine writers --
those in the know seek out their amazing but somewhat obscure sparkling wine. There may be funky gnomes on the label of their value offering, but look past the "old hippie" whimsy and you'll drink some of the best "Indie" sparkling wine made in the USA. Mountain Dome is to American sparkling makers as "Grower" Champagne makers are to the big Champagne houses in France -- artisans hand crafting memorable and unique wines.

Mountain Dome Cuvee Forté $32.95/$29.66
Our favorite. Tiny, tiny bubbles, fine body and depth, and the nose has hints of tangerine rind, honeysuckle, freshly baked croissant, and vanilla. Flavors dance in the mouth and range from apple, pear, and creamy starfruit to spicy citrus and white peach. Finish is long and polished, adding mineral and citrus peel to the mix. Pick this wine for special celebrations, it's a refined, elegant sparkler with a real cult following of winelovers in the know.

Mountain Dome Brut Rosé $24.95/$22.45
Mountain Dome has made sparklers for over 25 years, and this wine shows the winery's care and expertise. A sophisticated sparkler with apple, pear and spice flavors and hints of hazelnuts and cream. A long finish with distinct hints of toasted hazelnuts calls for Northwest Copper River Salmon, if you can get it.

Mountain Dome Brut non vintage $15.95/$14.35
(the "gnome" wine")
Their best value offering, and
it gives so much more than other sparklers at its
price. It is a clear light-gold wine with an active
and persistent bubble stream. There’s juicy white
fruit and crisp, fresh and lingering acidity; it’s not
bone-dry, there’s just a hint of fresh fruit sweetness.
Not that anybody would buy wine for the
label, this one’s cartoonishly colorful, with hippie type
gnomes on the label that are actually styled
after the winery owners and their kids.

READ ABOUT MOUNTAIN DOME
Mountain Dome Winery
Artisanal Sparkling Wine House Shines in the Northwest
by Christina Kelly
Mountain Dome is tucked into the foothills between the Washington and Idaho border, under the shadow of Mount Spokane. The Manz's home is a geodesic dome surrounded by carved gnomes, housing a family that produces amazing but somewhat obscure sparkling wine on an artisanal scale. Next door is the winery, where Michael Manz, whose day job was as a physician, perfected his craft for thirty years, passing it on to his son Erik. Sadly, Michael passed away last November.
