Quilceda Creek, Andrew Will, Mark Ryan, Cadence ... Soos Creek?
These five Washington wineries might not seem like peers at first glance. But consider the vineyards that provide their coveted wines: Champoux and Ciel du Cheval. While the first four are synonymous with Washington wine, Soos Creek flies under the radar, turning grapes into purple gold. From the same vineyard that makes Quilceda Creek Cab and Andrew Will Sorella comes this indie-sensational Champoux Cab. Delivering lipsmacking, balanced, age-worthy Cab for $36 isn't easy, but Soos Creek nails it. The 2006 Soos Creek Champoux Cabernet rocks. To me, the hallmark of Champoux Cabernet is the big, beautiful black cherry core. Soos Creek's Cab adds sweet blueberry and blackberry with vanilla mocha and dried herbs. Supple and totally delicious.
Winelovers in Oregon have one of the best selections of small, artisan made Italian wines in the country, at bargain prices. Some highly regarded small Italian wineries, whose production might be too small for the big importers, are directly imported by committed, dynamic individuals of the Oregon wine industry.
On March 11, 2009, Wine Spectator's "Insider" named Andrew Will Sorella 06 one of their "HOT WINES" and gave it 95 points. Wine Spectator said: "Tight, focused and distinctive, this sharp-edged wine shows ripe currant, spice, tobacco and coffee flavors that sneak up on you. They start slow but swirl through the mildly grippy tannins into a long, expressive finish, making for a beautifully compact and complex wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2011 through 2018. From Washington." - H.S.
The Carter Vineyard Pinot noir Hillblock 06 received 93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Pinot Noir Hillblock was made by Ken Wright from a vineyard planted in 1983. Wright also makes a Carter Vineyard designate under his own label which I found to be equally uplifting. The Hillblock was aged in 70% new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. Cherry red in color, it has a superb perfume of pain grille, spice box, red and black cherry and black raspberry. This is followed by a layered, velvety-textured, succulent wine with great depth, concentration and structure for this vintage. It will evolve for 2-3 years and offer prime drinking from 2010 to 2018."
Now is your time to beat the critics to the new Ex Umbris Syrah. Stock up before the frenzy. Gobs of Marionberries and black raspberries are interspersed with licorice, milk chocolate, and coffee. A superbly rich, supple texture helps carry lingering sweet fruit, violets, and white pepper through the finish.
After 20 years making Pinot noir from celebrated vineyards, and dozens of 90+ ratings, their top price for a bottle is under $50. In 2002, Robert Parker named Mark Vlossak (pictured at right) a "Wine Advocate Hero" and said his Pinots: "were the finest Pinots I tasted ... yet were some of the cheapest wines in my report.
During Maggie Harrison's decade long position as assistant winemaker at Sine Qua Non, she helped make legendary, 100 point wines. We are lucky to have Maggie making Pinot noir in Oregon..
We're standing by last year's provocative statement: we'd rather drink the Andrew Will Sorella than the 100 point Quilceda Creek Cab. Besides the obvious $50 saved for each bottle, the Sorella is powerful and refined. The two wines share the same fruit pedigree - Washington's Champoux Vineyard. This is the pinnacle of Washington wine.

The best Washington Cabs stand toe-to-toe with big name California Cabs, but you won't find dinky allocations, inflated prices, and mailing list hassles with most Washington Cabs. What you do get is huge, rich, complex reds from 20-30 year-old vines that are often more approachable, yet with balance to age for years. A couple steaks on the grill and any one of these wines...
it doesn't get any better!

The Wall Street Journal lauded Washington Syrah:
"As a group, these are the most exciting red wines being made in America today.....we were, quite simply, blown away. When these wines got it right, they were intense experiences, with purple-black color; massive, tightly wound fruit; hints of all kinds of herbs; great acidity; a dark core of fruit that, more than once, made us think of crushed coal; and a genuine sense of excitement."
