The
Adelsheim family are pioneers of the Oregon wine industry, their wines
are highly sought after and hard to obtain, and they have maintained reasonable
prices even in the face of high demand and limited supply. Michael Adelsheim
markets the wines, while David Adelsheim oversees the winery and has recently
been pivotal in the development of six new appellations in Yamhill County.
Small amounts of Adelsheim's wines
are made, and we are sometimes out of stock of the reserve and single
vineyard selections. Their reserves are special, to be laid down for aging,
with big tannic structures that benefit from time. The white wines are,
in general, full bodied, although the Pinot Blanc is lean, crisp, and
minerally.
In
1997, Adelsheim Vineyard moved its winemaking and office facilities into
a beautiful new facility. By 1998, most of the "last minute bugs"
had been worked out in the new winemaking area. David hopes that well
thought out systems will allow the winemaking to really shine in the great
years, and will control quality in difficult grape growing years.
Thus, in the 21st vintage, David Adelsheim is giving
new winemaker David Paige all the tools he needs create wonderful wines
with a minimum of organizational snags.
Although a new chapter is being written for Adelsheim
Vineyard, it most assuredly is based upon what came before. The house-style
remains the same; rich elegance, balance, finesse, moderate use of new
oak, etc. Now that the winery is in place, its back to the vineyards
(six of them and counting) for more research to continue the quest for
improvement of their wines.
The Adelsheims are in the process of reconsidering
their single vineyard and Reserve style wines- as new vineyards mature
and come online, they are introducing new Pinot Noirs and changing the
composition of the well known Elizabeth's Reserve. Their Pinot Noir "Penta
Reserve" is made from the grapes from five different vinyards (thus
"Penta") and may be blended differently in future years.
