Oregon Direct Imports: The Italian Connection
Top Ratings, Awesome Prices
PODERE RUGGERI CORSINI
Oregon Exclusive: "Matot" Rosso $10.95
Winelovers in Oregon have one of the best selections of small, artisan made Italian wines in the country, at bargain prices. In the case of the Corsini "Matot" red, Oregon is the only state in the country to import it! Podere Ruggeri Corsini is one of those highly regarded, small Italian wineries whose production is too small for the big importers.
While Avalon's focus is Oregon and Washington wines, sometimes, a winery from another part of the world is just too good to miss. We love Italian wines, and want to share the "insider" gems with you. Tucked into the prime Barolo hills just outside Monforte d'Alba, Corsini is a family operation founded in 1995, and run by husband and wife team Nicola Argamente and Loredena Addari. They farm 18 acres of Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Pinot Nero grapes.

Oregon Exclusive!
The Matot is a blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto that is made exclusively for two markets: Oregon and Germany! This stuff flies off the shelf - it's an incredible value in Italian wine. Packed with juicy, ripe dark berry and cherry flavors that are round and mouthfilling, adding a touch of earth and tannin on the finish.

Corsini Barolo 04 $44.95/$40.46
"Barolo 2004 is a must have." - Decanter Magazine
Barolo review in Decanter:
Best Barolo's from 2004
Five Star Rating: "Lots of breadth on the nose, ranging from wild berries through flowers and spice to mint and graphite. Punchy impact, long complex development and lingering fragrance in at the end. Suavely elegant. Drink 2009-2024".
Seductive aromas of licorice, red berries, rose petals, spice, and resin. The scents from a glass of Barolo are hypnotic and ethereal--there are few wines like it.
Maybe the best thing is realizing the aromatics will only improve with time!
The palate offers loads of macerated cherry and blueberry that sweetens on the finish, picking up blackberry, then mingling with cedary spice and subtle dark coca on the structured yet refined finish.
This is outstanding value Barolo that will provide years of enjoyment in the cellar--you could buy a case and drink a bottle each year for the next twelve and find an evolving masterpiece. Best to have this with food for near term drinking, like hearty meat dishes (braised short ribs would be perfect), from a decanter.
Corsini
Barbera d'Alba 07
$14.95/$13.45
I'm not a big "color guy" when it comes to wine, but it's so easy to be captivated by the deep color of Corsini Barbera. That's only the beginning, as intense aromas of violets, chocolate, and mixed black fruits hit you.
Both rich and nimble, with impeccable balance, this Barbera works equally well as a sipper and with a variety of meals. We had it with farfalle, grilled chicken, and pesto cream. Fermented in stainless steel to preserve the bright, delicious character of Barbera.

Corsini
Barbera d'Alba Superiore "Armujan" 06
$26.95/$24.25
Wow. This stunning reserve Barbera is one of northern Italy's best values. Unlike the Barbera 07, the Armujan spends 18 months in French oak barrels, which adds a velvety texture and enhances the chocolate tones.

Corsini
Nebbiolo 06
$17.95/$16.16
What do you drink while you're waiting for your Barolo to age? Corsini Nebbiolo! Classic aromas of licorice, flowers, and meat are backed by intense fruit. Gobs of sweet dark cherries and blackberries linger on the youthfully tannic frame. Better decanted, but very enticing right out of the gate when paired with a rustic beef stew.
