Abacela
at
Avalon
Saturday
April 20th
12 - 4 PM
We
are so pleased to be able to host a free tasting of Abacela's wines
at the store!
Come try Earl's Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, and Malbec. This
is a great chance to experience the winery that has pioneered the
growing of Tempranillo and other traditional Southern European grape
varietals in Oregon. Assistant winemaker Darryl Johnson will pour
and answer questions. And the wines will be SALE
PRICED for the day.
Oregon's
Pinot Trio
by Cole Danehower
Black, gray, or white, Oregon seems to be one of the best places
in the world to grow all the major color variations of the Pinot
grape.
Ok, so that's
not much of a surprise for the black variety of Pinot. Since a seminal
tasting in 1976 when David Lett's Pinot noir from The Eyrie Vineyards
outclassed the majority of Burgundy's best, Oregon's reputation
for growing fine Pinot noir has been moving steadily upward. But
Pinot doesn't come only as a black grape! Today, Oregon is producing
more than just great noir of Pinot. Increasingly, Oregon Pinot gris
and Pinot blanc are turning heads.

Abacela Wines
Earl says this is his best vintage yet- we say,
he pulls so much rich flavor from his hot, southern Oregon site
that we think we're in Spain or Southern France. Inky dark colors,
huge fruit, yet with structure that will let his wines age for
years.

Chateau
Ste Michelle
Erioca 2001
$22.99
LAST CHANCE
A lot more popular than CSM ever anticipated, this
wine has come and gone almost instantly-
Order
now for summer sipping- next release is April 2003!
This
wine is a collaborative effort of Chateau Ste Michelle in Washington
State andErnst Loosen's winery in Germany. Last year's vintage
received 91 points from Wine Spectator, and the 99 vintage was
one of the top 100 wines of the year from Wine Spectator!
This
wine offers opulent, lush pear and apple aromas and is full bodied,
with plush tangerine, sweet tea, honey, and mineral flavors. I
think this vintage is the best so far. JY
Van
Duzer Pinot Noir 99
Barrel Select $25.99
" Outstanding!" from Wine Press NW
Jim makes the most sippable Pinot noirs,
balanced and rich.
Most years, a
few barrels at Van Duzer stand out for their full flavor, interesting
flavor notes or rich body. The 1999 Barrel Select is blended primarily
from classic Burgundy clones in the Van Duzer home vineyard and
rounded out with grapes from vineyards in the Eola Hills and the
Red Hills of Dundee.
ExpectVan
Duzer's typical bright berry and cherry character but with a plum
and currant component and a bit more richness than the 1998 bottling.
In the mouth, a rich body and notes of violet, chocolate and
black tea become apparent.

See you at
Taste Washington
April 20th!
Woodward
Canyon
Old Vine Cabernet 99
INTRO PRICE $60.00
regular $67.99

This 1999 "old
vines" cabernet sauvignon is a powerful and worthy successor to 1995,
1997 and 1998 "old vines". Flavors of ripe raspberry and blackberry
married with spicy, toasted oak and vanilla explode in the mouth! The
color is deeply purple and the texture is concentrated and rich, yet supple.
It will benefit greatly from additional cellaring, and with proper storage,
should last fifteen years.
Woodward
Canyon
Merlot 2000
Walla Walla Vallwy
INTRO PRICE $39.99
regular $45.99
This
wine was produced from 63% Woodward Canyon Estate, 22% Pepper Bridge and
15% Seven Hills Merlot. The average brix was 24.5 at harvest. Average
yield was 3 tons per acre.
The
ability to blend with these 3 vineyards has given Woodward a spectacular
Walla Walla Valley merlot, with deep color, ripe cherry, chocolate, mocha,
and spice flavors, The wine is firm but elegant, and the finish is long
and generous. The wine may be consumed now but will improve significantly
with bottle age. With proper storage, this wine may be enjoyed for up
to ten years.
Torii
Mor Pinot Noir 99
Seven Springs Vineyard
SALE $48.99 regular $59.99

Kelly Fox, assistant
winemaker
This
beautiful Pinot possesses a generous nose of black raspberries, ripe plums,
hoisin sauce, and vanilla spice, with overtones of lavender and cedar
needles. Cassis, blackberry, boysenberry syrup, and rootbeer are supported
by an incredibly balanced frame with supple body and appealing texture.
The
white pepper finish with sweet tannins is complex, mouthcoating, and slow
to end.
