Archery
Summit's Cole
Danehower reviews the wines It's "business as usual" at Archery Summit in Dundee. That's both the skillfully delivered message of management and-if my recent tasting of both the 2000 and 2001 vintages is any evidence-the message of the wines.------------ READ THE ARTICLE HERE Archery

Cristom
Releases Cristom Wines makes a very small production of very fine wines. Experienced winemaker Steve Doermer blends contemporary technology with age-old winemaking traditions. Cristom's expression of Oregon's terroir is fascinating, and the wines are carefully crafted. These are food wines, in a more French than California style, with great aging potential. Cristom

To
blend or not to blend. . . That is the question for many winemakers.
Whether 'tis nobler to the palate of consumers to present the tastes
of an individual grape variety or single-vineyard site-or, by blending,
to vanquish such character and instead create a mixture of different
wine lots that in the bottle becomes a sum greater than its parts.
Danielle Andrus Montalieu and husband Laurent Montalieu are both established and respected wine industry members, with more than a decade of experience each. Soléna, named after their daughter, prduces small amounts of very impressive wines. In a recent tasting, what most impressed me was the complexity of the wines, while retaining a full-bodied, rich profile. No need to disguise flaws with toasty oak and high alcohol levels here- the wines are stunningly clean, with layers of flavors co-existing in a framework that is true to the varietal character of the grape. The Cabernet Sauvignon ($35) , sadly in very limited supply, impressed me the most, perhaps for the long, silky, rose and violet laced finish that went on and on. This wine compares quite favorably for my palate to many $60 and up Cabs. The grapes are from the outstanding Klipsun Vineyard. The Solena Merlot ($25) is really just as impressive as the cab, and it is unusually complex for a richly made, full bodied Merlot. This wine could actually use some aging, with the same multilayered clarity that is a hallmark of Laurent's wines. I
hope you will try these reasonably priced and provocative wines- they'll
stimulate conversation among wine lovers!
