2004 Wine Festivals Are Springing Up!
The
hustle and bustle of the holidays is over. The calendar now has some
empty dates on it. You now find yourself asking, “Now what can
we do?”
It seems to cold to go wine tasting. So now what?
We are now entering Wine Festival season.
Oregon Wine and Food Festival
February
20, 21 and 22, 2004
Held at the Salem Fairgrounds, this festival
is celebrating
its coming of age this year, it hits 21. The festival is smaller
than in the past. They anticipate 20 wine booths as well as food
and craft
booths. Entertainment will also be a part of the festival as well
as celebrity chef demonstrations. It’s a great way to break into the
festival season. The event is open to all ages. Tickets at $5.00 in advance,
$7.00 at the door. Call (503) 391-2639 for information.
Newport Seafood
and Wine Festival
February 27, 28 and 29, 2004
This festival is
not for the faint of heart. It is big, it is busy and it is crowded!
This year
marks the 27th Anniversary of this festival sponsored by the
Newport Chamber of Commerce. Fifty-nine wine booths will dot the landscape
at the Newport Marina. The wineries represent Oregon, Washington
and
a few
California entries as well. You will also find food booths as
well as those with gifts and art for sale. The event is limited to
guests
over
the age of 21. Admission fees are $6.00 on Friday and Sunday,
$9.00 on Saturday.

McMinnville Wine and Food Classic
March 26, 27 and
28, 2004
For
the past couple of years, this festival has been held at the
campus of Linfield College in McMinnville. The venue is perfect for
this event.
There is one large room housing many wine, food and art/gift
booths. Beyond that is a tented area with addition booths. Admission
is
$10 each
day and is open to all ages. You will find not only wine, food
and gift booths, but demonstrations as well. Many local, well-known
chefs will
put on demonstrations and local bands will entertain. 503-472-4033.
The Astoria-Warrenton
Crab & Seafood Festival
April 23, 24 and 25, 2004
Held at the Clatsop
County Fairgrounds, this is one of the top festivals in Oregon. It is
open to all ages with entertainment for all including a petting zoo and
crab races. Admission is $5.00 on Friday and Sunday, $7.00 on Saturday.
$3.00 for those over 62 and $1.00 for children under the age of 12. Parking
at the site is very limited and the organizers will have shuttles from
many local points in Astoria, including the Port of Astoria. The shuttle
service is free.
I don’t know if they will have the crab
dinner this year, but in the past, it has been my favorite
thing to do. The
local Chamber of Commerce put on a dinner consisting of a whole
crab (halibut one year when crab was not available), cole slaw,
bread and
corn. It was a messy meal and worth the sacrifice of each and
every napkin needed to soak up the crab juice.
So there you
have it, the festival
season highlights for early 2004. I encourage you to get
out there, taste the wines and then, of course, visit Avalon Wine
to purchase your favorites!
Until next time, Cheers! |
