Falling for Fall Line
Love at First Taste
And Introducing The Evening Lands -
Oregon/California Hybrid
Fall Line Winery offers the best value-priced line-up of Washington reds on the market. New Seattle-based winery Fall Line blew us away - owner and winemaker Tim Sorenson brought his wines by the store yesterday and we started work on this email immediately. Sorenson cut his teeth in the cellars of Cadence winery, where he learned to craft Bordeaux blends from some of Washington's best vineyards. Who isn't looking for lush, structured, and refined reds for $30?
We fill out today's Monster Cab email with a classic Napa Cab from a new Oregon/California hybrid winery, The Evening Lands.
"The Table" is a California Cab under $30. Taste it blind, and you'll swear it's from Harlan (shhh!). You'll be hearing more from us about this new west coast winery later. It's one of the most exciting projects we've found in a very long time.

Parker's Wine Advocate 92 Points
Fall Line Cabernet Sauvignon 06
$30.95/$27.86
92 points, Wine Advocate, August 2008:
"The nose offers up notes of vanilla bean, coconut, black currants, and blackberry liqueur. Layered and ripe, bordering on opulent, it nicely conceals enough tannin to carry the wine through another 4-5 years of evolution. This concentrated, lengthy effort should attain its peak by 2013 and remain at that level through 2026."
The best new mid-priced Cabernet from Washington. Pure cassis aromas and flavors, mixing with black berries, plums, black cherries, and baking spices. A lingering sweetness on the finish is accented by subtle sage leaf and integrated tannins. The Fall Line 06 is versatile as a sipper or with any hearty meal--it has perfect balance and refinement, but plenty of gushing, yummy fruit. An Avalon Big Reds Club selection and highly recommended. - Avalon

Parker's Wine Advocate 90+ Points
Fall Line Artz Vineyard
Red Blend 06
$30.95/$27.86
90+ points, Wine Advocate, August 2008:
"Purple colored with aromas of paine grille, pencil lead, spicebox, and black fruits, it is a bit tighter than the 2005. It offers plenty of spicy black fruit flavors, good depth and balance, and a lengthy finish. Give it 2-3 years of additional cellaring and drink it through 2020."
Gorgeous and heady scents of baking spice-shaded black berries and blueberries make you want to dive in. There's an explosive core of blueberry and cassis fruit, with rosemary highlights. Sweet anise emerges and carries through the plush finish. Tim did an excellent job taming the burly tannins of Red Mountain, producing a red with near universal appeal. - Avalon

Parker's Wine Advocate
89 Points
Fall Line Aldercreek Vineyard
Red Wine 06
$30.95/$27.86
89 points, Wine Advocate, August 2008:
"It exhibits an expressive bouquet of cedar, tobacco, clove, cinnamon, allspice, red cherry and blackberry. The tannins are light and the wine has elegance along with very good depth and a pure finish. It merits 2-3 years of additional cellaring and should drink well through 2020."
Voluptuously textured Merlot and Cab Franc serve up fleshy, ripe red and black plums coupled with cherries and dark currants. Mellow tobacco, mineral and earth notes resonate on the finish, giving complexity to the expressive fruit. - Avalon

Introducing "The Table"
Oregon/California Hybrids that Overdeliver
New Oregon/California Hybrid Winery
"The Evening Lands"
"The Table"
Cabernet Sauvignon 07
$29.95/$26.96
So why a California wine?
Are you nuts?
No, we found a hybrid Oregon/California winery, The Evening Lands, and their first wines are made from vineyards in both states.
And they are too good - we would be crazy to pass on these wines.
The Evening Lands, wanting to "over deliver" their first wines, bought some incredible juice. And made a Cab that's astounding for the price.
Why is "The Table" Cab so good and so incredibly cheap? I mean, Napa Cab - what is wrong about this picture?
Turns out, if you get in at just the right time, and know where to look, there's some amazingly good juice for sale in Napa. Pete, the vineyard manager at The Evening Lands, also manages vineyards who sell grapes to Harlan, Araujo, etc.
