Not so "the Dusky" - it flys higher with each year.   Dusky Goose Winery is a collaboration between winemaker Lynn Penner Ash and owners John and Linda Carter. The Carters are completely dedicated to making a small amount of wine that epitomizes the best the Dundee Hills terroir can produce.   Popularized by word of mouth alone, Dusky Goose Pinot noir is perhaps Oregon's most sought after wine.   Dusky Goose Pinot noir 07 $58.95   Balanced and beautiful. A rich and graceful perfume of raspberry, rose, cherry, spice box and raspberry tea introduces the superbly layered Dusky Goose 07.   Replete with sweet, succulent fruit, the palate fans out with dark dried cherry, raspberries and fresh cream, with hints of darker berries. Full and round, silky and ripe, the Dusky finishes with its classic truffle note, caramel, mixed berries and a touch of dried thyme.   The Dusky 07 has a long life ahead of it - our first bottle was open for five days and continued changing, staying fresh through the last sip. Made in the style of a classic Right Bank Bordeaux everyday red - sweet cherry and berry fruit combine with a most pleasant creme brulee/toasted sugar in the finish. Ready to drink, it's classic Andrew, and classic Right Bank everyday red - chery and berry fruit plus a hint of most pleasant creme brulee/toasted sugar in the finish.

Andrew ages this wine in American oak, and the characteristic chocolate and smoky vanilla notes show in aroma and flavor. Pair with ribs or burgers.

Mesalliance is a Merlot dominated blend with Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. Andrew named it Mesalliance because he felt, back in 1997 when he first created this wine, that Merlot was sort of a second tier grape. He's changed his opinion of Merlot but kept the cool name.

Owner and winemaker Jerry Riener calls Chalk Line his "kitchen sink wine". Chalk Line contains a little of just about every lot he brought in. The nose on the 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Syrah, 16% Cabernet Franc and 19% Merlot blend has big black and red fruits with a little smoke and spice. Flavors of red and black cherries with black raspberries lead to a long silky finish.

This wine was made to be very approachable at a young age. You can age this wine, but it's not necessary.

Jerry's other job is in law enforcement. You can guess where the "chalk line" reference comes from.

Flavors are of rich, juicy cherry, with notes of cedar and spice box. Bright fruit and a mouth filling finish. A nice wine for a special dinner or at this price, every dinner!

Eric Hamacher re-priced his "value" Pinot noir for the 2008 vintage (from $26.95), and the quality far exceeds the price.

At a recent tasting of many of Oregon's best Pinot noirs, this wine was a standout, at any price.

The aromas are focused with creamy notes of raspberry and cherry fruit. The same fruit is apparent in the mouth, with a bright, fresh edge to the cherry and black raspberry flavors. There is also a nice sweetness to the fruit, and hints of dried herbs, a touch of minerality, and notes of cedar that add depth and complexity.

A bit above the price point for this email but so good it must be mentioned is the Broadley Estate Reserve Pinot noir $37.95/$34.16. Of Broadley's 31 vintages, Craig and Morgan made some of Broadley's finest Pinot noirs in 2008.
