The Columbia Valley has a warmer climate than the North, and some vineyards benefit from the "Banana Belt" effect of west facing valleys protected from cold winds. Several wineries are based in downtown Portland, using old industrial buiildings and warehouses to make wine and host customers.

Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay dominate the varietals grown in the Columbia.
