It's virtually impossible to find
Rosso di Montalcino for $15
I've been waiting nearly two years to write about the Montalcino wines of Castelli Martinozzi. I visted the fairy-tale property on my honeymoon, and it's tough to write objectively. So, ciao objectivity. Castelli Martinozzi Rosso di Montalcino will carry you away to a Tuscan villa, where you're sipping wine, looking out on the sun-baked vineyards.
Castelli Martinozzi's Villa Santa Restituta is a magical place. The centuries-old Montalcino estate is situated above Angelo Gaja's Pieve Santa Restituta estate, from which Gaja makes $200+ wines. Martinozzi's prime vineyards produce outstanding Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino.
Brunello di Montalcino is widely considered one of the finest wines on the planet. Rosso di Montalcino is made from the same Sangiovese Grosso grapes, but requires less aging before optimal drinking. At Castelli Martinozzi, Rosso di Montalcino is not a secondary wine - it is a complement to their more austere and ageworthy Brunello.
Castelli Martinozzi has made wine from the Sangiovese Grosso grape for over 100 years, and has been an important agricultural site for hundreds of years. Olive oil is still produced on-site, with an ancient stone mill. When touring the property, you can see the remains of an Etruscan (pre-Roman) road.
Open a bottle of Castelli Martinozzi Rosso di Montalcino 05 and fall in love with Italy all over again.

Hints of dusty fruit remind me of driving along the Cyprus-lined road
to Martinozzi. The flavors burst with mixed cherries, red plums, and
sweet herbs.
Initially fruity, the 05 is balanced by a slightly more austere
finish of earth, resin, and tannins. This is ideal for drinking now,
with any of your favorite Tuscan-inspired foods - try herb-roasted
chicken, fresh pasta with a rich pork ragu, or a plate of nice
meats, chesses, and good olive oil. This is classic,
traditional-style Sangiovese.
Why Italian Wine from a Northwest Wine Specialist?
While Avalon's focus is Oregon and Washington wines, sometimes, a winery from another part of the world is just too good to miss. We love Italian wines, and want to share the "insider" gems with you.
Winelovers in Oregon have one of the best selections of small, artisan made Italian wines in the country, at bargain prices. In some cases, Oregon is the only state in the country to import it!
