Referring to Washington State Merlots, Harvey Steiman of Wine Spectator says in an article:

"Few of them have quite the depth and richness Leonetti achieves, but among those that demonstrate how close they are getting in that style are Bookwalter, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L'Ecole No. 41, Columbia Crest and Andrew Will."

Bookwalter Winery was established by Jerry Bookwalter in the fall of 1983. Jerry brought to the winery more than 20 years of experience in Viticulture and Ag Production from California and Washington State as well as a B.S. degree from UC Davis. In the fall of 1997, Jean & Jerry Bookwalter welcomed their son John into the business. John's marketing degree, and more than 10 years of beverage sales and marketing experience will greatly benefit the expanding needs of Bookwalter Winery

Jerry's experience managing and growing grapes began in the mid-70's while serving as the general manager of the very successful Sagemoor, Bacchus and Dionysus vineyards. During this time, Jerry developed a keen knowledge as well as an interest in the production of wine with the then burgeoning wine industry of Washington State.

Identifying a need for high quality producers of Washington wines, as well as understanding the importance of finding, and developing the best possible grapes for the wines, Jerry set out to build a winery to do just that. Without missing a beat, Jerry hit the mark in the early 80's by producing gold medal winning wines soon after the doors were open.

Shortly thereafter, Wine Spectator (September 1994) recognized Bookwalter Winery as one of three Washington Wineries to watch. This recognition came on the heels of several very high marks for the 1992 Merlot, as well as the 1989 & 1990 Cabernet Sauvignons.

This Success has continued through 2001, as Bookwalter Winery was one of only eleven Washington Wineries to produce three or more 90 and above rated wines (1996, 1997, 1998) based on The Wine Spectators 100 point wine rating system.

Bookwalter Winery produces approximately 12,000 cases of exceptional, high quality wines ranging from the sweet wines of Johannisberg Riesling and Chenin Blanc, to the classic red wines of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. All told, Bookwalter Winery currently produces six different Varieties.

Bookwalter Winery is located at the western edge of Richland just off Exit 3, the Queensgate Rd. Exit off I-182. The tasting room is open Monday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
