New Tanzer 94 Point Wines
Bergstrom, Patty Green, Beaux Freres
2008 Oregon Pinot noir
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar newsletter published their latest reviews of Oregon Pinot noirs yesterday.
Tanzer's newsletter is an internationally respected bi-monthly covering wine regions across the world. It's read by the wine industry and serious collectors. Oregon reviews are done by Josh Raynolds.
Tanzer's rating system is calibrated to reward the best wines with scores that are several points below other publications. A 94 from Tanzer, for example, is equivalent to a 95-96 in other publications. And check out those excellent tasting notes!
Wine critics love the Bergstrom Pinots. These 94-point scores are the first for 2008 Bergstrom wines.
We predict similar to higher scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate.

Bright ruby. Pure, vibrant aromas of raspberry, red cherry and fresh flowers. Juicy, silky and penetrating, with excellent lift to its red berry and candied floral flavors. At once deep and vibrant, in a strikingly elegant style. Finishes bright and persistent, with an alluringly delicate touch. - Josh Raynolds

Deep, vivid red. Lovely lift and purity to the aromas of wild strawberry, bitter raspberry and rose. Supple, sweet and delicious, with a juicy ripeness to the sappy red fruit, mineral and floral pastille flavors. Very suavely integrated acidity gives this wine a weightless feeling but it also packs a serious punch. Finishes with sweet tannins and outstanding mineral lift. - Josh Raynolds
Avalon Wine tasting note:
We are enchanted with the nose of the de Lancellotti 08. At the risk of sounding too obvious: it just smells like great Pinot! A spectrum of spices and beautiful fruit makes this jump right out of the glass. So pretty, so rich, unfurling layers of sun-ripened raspberries, a melange of cherries and specks of wild blueberry that stay bright, meshing with strawberry, licorice, cinnamon and minerals on the silky finish. Come to think of it, the whole wine is enchanting! Showy and balanced, you can drink this now if you want but it'll be better with 18 months plus in the cellar. - Marcus

Deep, bright ruby. Wild red and black fruit and potpourri aromas are lifted by smoky minerals and blood orange. Wonderfully sweet and sappy, with fully ripe red berry flavors, a seamless texture and strong back-end spiciness. Stays just this side of exotic, finishing with outstanding clarity and spiciness and a persistent floral note. Green told me that this was fermented with a lot of whole clusters. - Josh Raynolds

Bright red. Exhilarating, nuanced scents of raspberry, Asian spices, cocoa powder, rose and orange zest. Compellingly silky and subtle on entry, then vibrant and delineated in the mid-palate, with a sexy floral quality lifting the flavors of crushed red and dark berries and blood orange. The wine's zesty minerality gives it a weightless impression and adds energy to the long, spicy, incisive finish. - Josh Raynolds

Bright red. Highly perfumed,
seductive bouquet of black raspberry, cherry-cola, incense and dried rose, with a slow-mounting mineral
element. Lively but strikingly concentrated as well, offering incisive red fruit and floral pastille flavors
underscored by intense spice and mineral qualities. Really stains the palate and finishes with superb
clarity and juicy, spicy raspberry and cherry notes. Etzel told me that a tiny bit of stems were used in this
year's wine. - Josh Raynolds
Perfection. Classic.
Perfection. Classic. A tremendous perfumed nose blossoms in the glass. Co-mingling of rose petal, lavender, crushed raspberry, forest floor, fresh turned earth, incense, roasted meat, cedar, and barely there peppery spice.
Fascinating to try in 10, 15, 20 years. In retrospective tastings of Oregon Pinot held in a decade or more from now, this will be the chief attraction. - Jean
Dark ruby with deep core of purple. This wine displays a striking minerality, plenty of forest floor along with raspberry and black current fruit profile. There is more structure, acidity and tannin and it cuts a fuller more complex profile framed in a hint of creamy oak. This is one of the best wines we have made in the past 18 vintages but it is difficult to compare with previous vintages as it is truly its own unique representation of Pinot. It is certainly richer than the 2007, better balanced than the 2004 and slightly less brash than the 2006. It is a wine for lovers of classic Pinot Noir who look for balance and elegance first along with significant substance to back them up.
