Beaux Freres
|
1997 Vintage A challenging vintage of extreme heat, wind, and rain. Extensive leaf-pulling as well as a selection of only the finest lots produced a robust, chunky although slightly rustic pinot noir revealing more of the Burgundian-like animal, leathery notes than the typical Beaux Frères. Over the last six months, the wine's rusticity has given way to a more polished effort with surprising flavor intensity, charm, and depth. Nevertheless, we remain concerned that in eight to ten years the vintage's tough tannin might reemerge to detract from what is turning out to be one of our most pleasant surprises. The color remains a dark ruby with no hint of amber, and the wine reveals plenty of black fruits, new saddle leather, roasted meats, dried herbs, and peppery aromas. The wine is medium to full-bodied.
Surprisingly, the tannin has gone into hiding with the essence of our
vineyard's fruit coming through. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010.
