Beaux Freres 2008 Estate Pinot noir
This is the Wine that Mike GREW
I identify with Mike Etzel and his winery, Beaux Freres.
We've both stayed with the same jobs, season after season, for a long time - me a wine shop & web site, and Mike a vineyard & winery. He bought his vineyard land in the mid-80's, about the same time I started Avalon Wine.
Staying put, doing the same thing year after year, might look like not much is changing. Grow the grapes, make the wine (Mike); update the database, help the customer (me). But underneath a lot is changing. Better code for the website (me); a new way of nourishing the vines (Mike). It's the little details that keep improving things and make the work satisfying.
With the release of the Beaux Freres Estate Vineyard Pinot 08, we witness a high point in the relationship between winemaker Mike Etzel and his vineyard: this is the wine that Mike GREW.
The Beaux Freres 2008 Estate Pinot noir benefits from a confluence of experience, vineyard health and perfect weather. It's a rare achievement - an almost perfect expression of Pinot noir.

Perfection. Classic.
Perfection. Classic. A tremendous perfumed nose blossoms in the glass. Co-mingling of rose petal, lavender, crushed raspberry, forest floor, fresh turned earth, incense, roasted meat, cedar, and barely there peppery spice.
Fascinating to try in 10, 15, 20 years. In retrospective tastings of Oregon Pinot held in a decade or more from now, this will be the chief attraction. - Jean
Dark ruby with deep core of purple. This wine displays a striking minerality, plenty of forest floor along with raspberry and black current fruit profile. There is more structure, acidity and tannin and it cuts a fuller more complex profile framed in a hint of creamy oak. This is one of the best wines we have made in the past 18 vintages but it is difficult to compare with previous vintages as it is truly its own unique representation of Pinot. It is certainly richer than the 2007, better balanced than the 2004 and slightly less brash than the 2006. It is a wine for lovers of classic Pinot Noir who look for balance and elegance first along with significant substance to back them up.

Given the clonal material and exposition this wine should always be different from the Beaux Freres vineyard despite an essentially identical upbringing in the vineyard and the cellar. True to our expectations the Upper Terrace shows a striking difference in personality and demeanor from the Beaux Freres. The color is a healthy dark plum to ruby purple. It is very Cotes du Nuits-like with its blue-black fruit and the underlying forest floor and floral character. - the winery

2007 Estate - Drinking Beautifully
Dark ruby-colored, the 2007 Estate offers an intense, sweet scent of black raspberry and cherry, wild strawberry, herb, earth, and dried flowers. Tasting the wine, a silky cream texture introduces flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, and black cherry. The rich, plump fruit is accented by subtle notes of sweet earth, truffle, Asian spice, and dried field herbs.
Fleshy, plush, and charming, the 2007 Estate is medium bodied, gaining weight and depth with decanting. Good acidity and ripe tannins are well proportioned for cellaring - the winery suggests that the wine will evolve for 10-12 years. - Avalon

2007 Upper Terrace
Beaux Freres Pinot noir Upper Terrace 07 - Darkest of the Beaux Freres Pinots, the Upper Terrace serves up an intense scent of black cherry and raspberry, mingling with violet, dried rose and forest floor. Velvety and sensual in texture, deep flavors of creamy black cherry and spice box linger in a long, pure finish.
The most intense and richly nuanced of Beaux Freres' 2007 Pinots, Mike suggests waiting two years to drink - and the wine will continue to evolve for 15 years. - Avalon

2007 Willamette Valley
The most approachable and ready to drink of the three Beaux Freres wines, the 2007 Willamette Valley is succulent and juicy. Sweet red raspberry and blackberry scents mingle with hints of dried flowers and fruit. Flavors reiterate the scent - there's a youthful lilt to the red cherry and berry flavors. Raspberry and sweet red cherry flavors are accentuated by pie spice, and a soft creaminess underlies all. We found the wine uplifting, lithe, and refreshing. -Avalon

Jared and Mikey Etzel, two sons of Beaux Freres' Mike Etzel, have their own winery, Coattails. Horsetail Pinot noir is their super value, ready to drink wine. This second vintage of Horestail 2008 wines attest to Jared and Mikey's mature and gifted craftsmanship.
Rose and cola spice intertwines with black cherry and red currant to create a lively Pinot. Sweet fruit and white pepper carry the finish. Great juice!

In only the best vintages, when Jared and Mikey Etzel feel that the quality is justified, will they release their Coattails Winery Pinot noir. The 2008 vintage marks its inaugural release. In terms of winemaking style, their father’s Beaux Freres Estate 08 is a benchmark for comparison. Both wines are made for cellaring and will be treasures to be enjoyed for ten, even twenty years.
Coattails' 2008 is a powerful Pinot with style and substance. Sporting a fuller texture than the Horsetail, Coattails shows a wide spectrum of fruit starting with red cherry and crushed raspberry, moving to currant, working in black cherry and a sliver of blackberry on the finish. This wine glides, picking up cedar, white pepper and a hint of toast. – Marcus
We have a limited amount of Coattails Pinot noir 08. It's a cellar selection and needs the same kind of time and care as their Dad's Upper Terrace – and might yield a similarly extraordinary experience.
